Energy-Linked Reactions Catalyzed by the Purified ATPase Complex (F0F1) from Rhodospirillum rubrum Chromatophores

1980

1. The isolation of the F0F1-ATPase complex from Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores by the use of taurodeoxycholate is described. 2. The enzyme preparation contains about 12 polypeptides; five are subunits of the F1 moiety. 3. The ATPase activity of the purified enzyme is dependent on the addition of phospholipids. 4. Km-vales for Mg2+-ATP and Ca2+-ATP are similar to the values obtained for the membrane-bound enzyme. 5. The F0F1-ATPase complex is more than 70% inhibited by oligomycin and N,N′-dicyclohexyl-carbodiimide. 6. The F0F1-ATPase complex was integrated into liposomes. The reconstituted proteoliposomes catalyzed energy transduction as shown by ATP-dependent quenching of acridine dy…

Acousto-optic interaction in polyimide coated optical fibers with flexural waves

2017

Acousto-optic coupling in polyimide-coated single-mode optical fibers using flexural elastic waves is demonstrated. The effect of the polyimide coating on the acousto-optic interaction process is analyzed in detailed. Theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement. Although the elastic attenuation is significant, we show that acousto-optic coupling can be produced with a reasonably good efficiency. To our knowledge, it is the first experimental demonstration of acousto-optic coupling in optical fibers with robust protective coating.

Multi-objective discrete optimization of laminated structures

2002

Abstract The paper is dedicated to the multi-objective optimal design of laminated composite structures. In order to provide sound-engineering designs, a few alternative and/or conflicting objectives must be taken into account. It is reasonable to consider the multi-objective optimization as a sensible enrichment with respect to single objective optimization, since the solutions are enforced to result optimal at the same time with respect to different objectives. Multi-objective optimization methods gained in the last years a growing interest in engineering, due to the possibility to determine a design possessing at the same time optimality with respect to different conflicting requirements…

Oxidative (Cross-)Coupling Reactions Mediated by C-H Activation of Thiophene Derivatives by Using Molybdenum(V) Reagents

2014

Oxidative coupling by using molybdenum pentachloride provides fast and modular access to sophisticated thienoacenes in excellent yields. The coupling process can be accomplished with thiophene and benzothiophene derivatives and provides various complex skeletons such as spirocyclic compounds. In this approach, the first cross-coupling reactions with the use of MoCl5 were established and important motifs for semiconducting materials were synthesized.

Distance and coupling: analyzing the pressures of accounting change in a city

2008

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the accounting performance measurement (PM) change process in a Finnish city.Design/methodology/approachInterpretive case study. Data consisted of 16 semi‐structured interviews. Analysis was based on institutional theory, particularly on “new institutional sociology” (NIS) studies.FindingsBudgeting and accounting PM became coupled into action when various intertwined (mostly institutional) pressures affecting change converged. Perceived crises were found to accelerate accounting change by deinstitutionalization, i.e. by breaking (drastically) existing routines and myths. Further, accounting rules and routines changed somewhat independently. Fur…

Initial conditions in AA and pA collisions

2016

A full understanding of the spacetime evolution of the QCD matter created in a heavy ion collision requires understanding the properties of the initial stages. In the weak coupling picture these are dominated by classical gluon fields, whose properties can also be studied via the scattering of dilute probes off a high energy hadron or nucleus. A particular challenge is understanding small systems, where LHC data is also showing signs of collective behavior. We discuss some recent results of on the initial matter production and thermalization in heavy ion collisions, in particular in the gluon saturation framework.

The full Boltzmann hierarchy for dark matter-massive neutrino interactions

2020

The impact of dark matter-neutrino interactions on the measurement of the cosmological parameters has been investigated in the past in the context of massless neutrinos exclusively. Here we revisit the role of a neutrino-dark matter coupling in light of ongoing cosmological tensions by implementing the full Boltzmann hierarchy for three massive neutrinos. Our tightest 95% CL upper limit on the strength of the interactions, parameterized via $u_\chi =\frac{\sigma_0}{\sigma_{Th}}\left(\frac{m_\chi}{100 \text{GeV}}\right)^{-1}$, is $u_\chi\leq3.34 \cdot 10^{-4}$, arising from a combination of Planck TTTEEE data, Planck lensing data and SDSS BAO data. This upper bound is, as expected, slightly …

A model for dark matter, naturalness and a complete gauge unification

2015

We consider dark matter in a minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) which breaks electroweak symmetry dynamically and leads to a complete unification of the SM and technicolor coupling constants. The unification scale is determined to be $M_{\rm U} \approx 2.2 \times 10^{15}$ GeV and the unified coupling $\alpha_{\rm U} \approx 0.0304$. Moreover, unification strongly suggest that the technicolor sector of the model must become strong at the scale of ${\cal O}$(TeV). The model also contains a tightly constrained sector of mixing neutral fields stabilized by a discrete symmetry. We find the lightest of these states can be DM with a mass in the range $m_{\rm DM} \approx 30-800$ GeV. We f…

Reheating the Standard Model from a hidden sector

2016

We consider a scenario where the inflaton decays to a hidden sector thermally decoupled from the visible Standard Model sector. A tiny portal coupling between the hidden and the visible sectors later heats the visible sector so that the Standard Model degrees of freedom come to dominate the energy density of the Universe before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We find that this scenario is viable, although obtaining the correct dark matter abundance and retaining successful Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is not obvious. We also show that the isocurvature perturbations constituted by a primordial Higgs condensate are not problematic for the viability of the scenario.

Third family of compact stars within a nonlocal chiral quark model equation of state

2019

A class of hybrid compact star equations of state is investigated that joins by a Maxwell construction a low-density phase of hadronic matter, modeled by a relativistic mean-field approach with excluded nucleon volume, with a high-density phase of color superconducting two-flavor quark matter, described within a nonlocal covariant chiral quark model. It is found that the occurrence of a stable branch of hybrid compact stars requires a nonvanishing vector meson coupling in the quark model that exceeds a minimal value which depends on the presence of a diquark condensate. It is shown that these hybrid stars do not form a third family disconnected from the second family of ordinary neutron sta…
